About the Area
Pomfret and Pomfret Center comprise a country community of about 4,000 souls. We are ideally located for a romantic get-away... just far enough for privacy, yet close enough for convenience. We are the center point for all of your explorations... golf courses, private schools, antiques, museums, shopping, and more.

Of course, with shade trees and huge lawn, it will be a tough choice. Yet, if you can break away, you might explore the ruins of 19th Century mill sites along Pomfret's Mashamoquet Brook. (The Brayton Grist Mill is open, and is right at the entrance to Mashamoquet State Park.) A good 1,000 acres in size, Mashamoquet Park is where Revolutionary War hero Israel Putnam is said to have slain the last wolf in the state of Connecticut back in 1742. While you're at it, enjoy the brook itself; the Owaneco Indians noted the Mashamoquet as a great fishing spot even way back in 1686. Actually, we have three streams in town. We have nearby apple and grape orchards, and pumpkins, too.

New to the area?
Towns in our immediate neighborhood include Ashford, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Chaplin, Columbia, Coventry, Eastford, Hampton, Killingly, Lebanon, Mansfield, Plainfield, Pomfret, Putnam, Scotland, Sterling, Thompson, Union, Willington, Windham, and Woodstock.

The Connecticut Audubon Society has been quite active in local preservation. Indeed, their office is in Pomfret Center. Their nearby Bafflin Sanctuary offers a large beaver pond, extensive fields, streams, and hemlock. Also be sure to see the historic Averill-Hotchkins house. Several Pomfret buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Brayton Grist Mill -- an 1890s mill with its original equipment -- and the Old Town House.
